Possible assault
Hi, I need to see whether I need to hire a lawyer or not. I don't have much so I'm not sure. This past weekend I was at a good friends house in Redford and we all were drinking - I had about three beers over four hours. His younger brother, 17, also a good friend of mine, was wrestling around with a number of other friends and was drinking heavily. I was not interested and sat playing videogames. Eventually, the 17 year old came over and goaded me up to wrestle. In fair play, we wrestled around, and we flipped over a couch. At this point he was knocked unconscious and I had hit him in the chest before I realized what had happened to him. As soon as I was up I saw he was out - he came to in about five seconds tops. He was perfectly fine, got up, but had an ugly rug burn on his face from the carpet, which looked worse the next day. I talked to him then and he said he was fine and all that. His parents however are pressing assault charges. I have no prior records of anything like that. I have yet to talk to the police - there were several witnesses, all of whom say it was an accident. Only his brother says it was on purpose and that I hit him in the face which was not the case. I talked to him the day after, etc, he said he's fine, and so on.
I'm calling the police station in the morning, and I need to know what I should do, or if I should worry.
EDIT: The state is Michigan, Redford - near Detroit.
Thanks,
James

Re: Possible assault
His brother is a witness?
I take it that there's no dispute that you and this person were wrestling and goofing around before he was injured. Even if the police believed you hit him in the face, unless there was cause to believe you were deliberately escalating the fight, within that context it's not entirely clear that they would charge you. If the majority of witnesses say that you didn't hit him in the face, and stopped fighting as soon as you saw he was unconscious, I doubt that they would charge you. But it's up to the police and prosecutor so I can really only guess.
