Do You Have to Wait Until You're 18 to Move Out
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Texas
I have read all over the internet and I am still not sure of the answer to my question. Can you move out at 16, 17, or do you have to wait until you are 18. I am 16. I live with my grandparents who have adopted me. We are having a lot of problems at home. They have verbally abused me and are making my life pretty much miserable because I want to be with someone that they don't approve of. They now have their friends watching me and sometimes taking pictures of me at school. They will not allow me to work. Is there anything that I could possibly do to leave? Please no rude comments. I do not wish to argue or be insulted because of how I feel or what's going on. So if you're going to be insulting please don't comment.
Re: 16 or 17 Year Olds Leaving Home
Texas has special exception in their laws for runaways at 17. As long as they notify parents and local police of their location they are fine. Here is the catch, unless they move in with a relative or can financially provide for themselves solo, whomever harbors them can be charged under exploitation or harboring a minor statutes. Here is the applicable section of TX Code with the laws you are dealing with.

Re: Dop You Have to Wait Until You're 18 to Move Out
There is no "special exception" in Texas that allows seventeen-year-old minors to run away. You appear to be thinking of the fact that a 17-year-old is not subject to juvenile court jurisdiction, but that only means that they won't be taken to court as a runaway, not that parents lose their authority.
Until you reach the age of majority in Texas, you are under your parents' jurisdiction. While it is possible for a person to avoid being prosecuted for harboring a runaway by providing proper notice of where the child is living, as described in the statute, that in no way prevents the parent from going over to that location to drag their child back home.

You're making the same complaints every other teenager has for the last 50 years or more. :cower:
Re: Dop You Have to Wait Until You're 18 to Move Out
If your parent or legal guardian says you can move out before you are 18, you can.
If your parent or legal guardian says you cannot move out before you are 18, you cannot.
It really is that simple.
