Landlord Suing Me for Non Payment After Her Super Took All the Rent Money and Left Co
My question involves an eviction/civil action in the state of: new jersey.
landlord is suing me for back rent after her superintendent who was the care taker of her properties has ran off to a different country with mine and multiple other tenant's money.
I lived in the building for a year and a half, always paid cash on time to the super who I made the agreement with. To my knowledge he was also the owner. After he fled the country I found out there was a different owner who has taken civil action against me and served me with an eviction notice.
Landlord currently has filed criminal charges against her super which are pending an investigation for fraud and theft of rent from multiple tenants.
Im a construction worker and don't have much money to hire representation and I was wondering if this is a case I may be able to fight on my own? Please help and thank you for any input in advance!

As long as she had an agency agreement with him to collect rent and you can prove by copy of cancelled check or receipt you paid your rent, she will lose. You are not at fault for her poor choice of employees.

Thank you very much, I do have receipts for the last few months of rent, now my only concern is that they will try to discredit the validity of my receipts as they have in the past when the super has left town...
