Caught Shoplifting but No Police Involvement
Long story short I made a stupid decision and shoplifted an $8 item from a Vons grocery store in California. I was approached and then handcuffed by LP once I reached my car in the parking lot. They took me to the back of the store and I gave them my full name and address but they did not see my ID as I left it in the car. They didn't call the police and I didn't sign any forms. I was told to never return to the store again. Do you think it is likely or possible they will still contact the police. What about civil demand letters being sent? Thanks in advance

Stay out of Vons. Stop stealing things.

Chances are you will get a civil demand from Vons's "lawyers." Its easy fishing for restitution.

If they didn't make an immediate police report, they're not likely to report it to police later. If the police do contact them, do not speak to them without an attorney.

Just be aware that while its unlikely for Vons to send your report to the police if they were not called at the time they do have until the statue of limitations to make a police criminal report. Lets say they found out that you stole from another Vons they can put the two together and then prosecute you as well since it was indeed your second offense etc. They are under no obligation not to contact the police.

If you go to various websites of the police there is an online reporting form and the LP has time to decide whether he or she will prosecute you via the police. One should not discount being reported to local authorities. Even if the LP officer said they would not contact the police they can still do so as they please.

At a Verizon store there is a sign that states"All thefts will be reported to local law enforcement" so it could be a corporate policy that overrides the LP. A corporation or small mom and pop business have every right to report you to the local authorities so as long as it falls under the legal statues.
