A mistake means you did it accidentally. This was no mistake. OWN UP. If I were the judge and heard you talk like this, I'd lock you up.

Also, keep thinking that what makes a criminal is a conviction. If you murder someone and don't get caught, you are a murderer. And since murder is against the law, a criminal.

YOU ARE A CRIMINAL, whether you get convicted or not.

    Oh, yeah .... GROW UP.

You're not a judge. And it seems that you're the only one who needs to grow up since you're getting so worked up for nothing.

The LP also said that I wouldn't be serving jail time, I would just have to pay everything back and it would be put down as disorderly behavior.

The LP have no control of what a Court decides and they had no business telling you that....if that is what they told you.

So risking your entire future gambling that you won't get caught thieving and that if you do, you'll somehow be able to get out of it is nothing?

    I'm with DD here.

Did they make you sign a letter stating that you would pay for the merchandise? Basically if the police were not involved and you did not receive a summons or go to jail, chances are that they wanted to handle this in house. With that being said, sounds like you got lucky. However, if you don't pay them back, be ready to do some jail time.

To reiterate with DeputyDog, you committed a crime. You should own up to it and be as cooperative as possible during this process. It is still possible for you to do jail time. JcPenny can come back at any time and call the police. Theft of more than $500 but below $1000 is typically considered a felony. You better be thanking your stars that you aren't already in prison.
