Rights of a Juvenile on Probation
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Georgia. I just turned 17 on the 21st of this month. I am a female. I finished all of my high school classes early & I graduate in December. I am on probation but my probation officer said that she is going to try to get me off early since I've been doing so well. I hate living with my grandma. I have been living with her since I was 3. She is very controlling. I've tried to suck it up b/c I felt like I don't have a choice but I can't take it anymore. I know that I'm still a child but she says that I can't live with her after I turn 18 but I'm not even allowed to get a job. I'm not a dependent person so her controlling ways frustrate me to the point of insanity. I take 4 mental medications for bipolar, depression, PTSD & ADHD so I get ssi. Am I allowed to work with ssi at 17? She doesn't even let me have any of the money. Is there a way that I could access some of it? I go without so many things that I need b/c she doesn't provide it. She selfish, spiteful, controlling & vindictive & I'm tired of being so frustrated. I graduate in December & I take college cosmetology classes at my local college but I don't have a way to get there b/c she claims to not have money for my car insurance . I haven't even got a permit. Can someone please tell me what I'm allowed to do? I really feel like packing up everything & roaming the streets the only thing that's stopping me is that I might not be able to graduate in December. Please help me. Thank you.

Definitely hang in there until after you graduate from high school. Look for a job within walking distance of your current home so that you can save some money. You can work and still receive SSI benefits as long as you earn less that 7014.00 a year (while a student under age 22) and there are other options for limited working while on SSI after you are no longer a student.
Re: Im 17, What Are My Rights
I want to make a distinction here.
The law does not prohibit you from having a job while you are on SSI, as LL has explained.
However, you are still a minor, which means you are under the care and control of your parent or legal guardian. If legal guardian is Grandma, and Grandma says you can't have a job, then you can't have a job.

no, SSI is welfare money to provide support for you (food, clothing, shelter, etc.), it is not a taxpayer funded allowance.
she would be mismanaging your money and risking owing the money back to social security if she were to squander it by giving it to you as pocket money.
Re: Im 17, What Are My Rights
Not exactly. As Rep Payee Gma sends in yearly a Rep Payee report showing how much went where for what. Allowing the child to have an allowance is not unreasonable as long as her other needs are being met.

There is a grocery store right across the street but the problem is that I'm not allowed to have a job

Well what if I don't get thing specifically for me? She buys the same groceries & that's really not much at all & clothes ? She hasn't bought me anything since 8th grade & I'm a senior in high school. She is already mismanaging the money. I never see any of that money nor is it ever spent specifically on me. This living situation is unbearable. Its so much more than what I'm saying on here. Its not b/c I don't want to follow her rules. Its so much more than that. She doesn't even care about me amongst other personal problems I have. I'm trying to keep my sanity & stay positive but its hard living with a spiteful, vindictive person.
Re: Im 17, What Are My Rights
If you are looking for a law that is going to force your grandmother to allow you to have a job whether she wants you to have one or not, there is no such law.
If the rent is paid, the utilities connected, you aren't naked and there is food in the house, the law is satisfied. The money is not intended to buy you things.
