Re: Civil Recovery Demand from Macys
Macy's is a very aggressive company. I would expect if the civil demand is not paid, the cost of it will go up due to legal fees and they will press criminal charges.

They will most likely pursue criminal charges if you don't pay.
Re: Caught Stealing and Issued a Civil Demand by Macys
The civil demand is NOT a fine. It's a repayment to the merchant for the damages you caused them. If you don't pay, they may sue you in civil court (with additional damages involved in that collection). Despite the other two posters, while you don't indicate where are, but I do not know of any case of Macy's ( any other major retailer) using the threat of criminal prosecution to compel you to pay the civil demand. In fact, this would be criminal itself. In fact, I don't have any indication that Macy's pursues civil litigation to recover the money other than form letters from the "attorney's."
You can always request to pay over time.

I know at one point they were trying to get the LP personnel to call people who hadn't paid their civil demands. Don't know whatever happened with that but I know I wouldn't do it. That is just asking for trouble.
Re: Caught Stealing and Issued a Civil Demand by Macys
Although state laws vary, in my state it would definitely not be illegal in any way to tie prosecution to civil restitution. Here that would not be extortion. It is done all the time. So it's not accurate to say that they can't prosecute you for failing to pay.
I also wouldn't bet the farm on them not suing you.
You figured out a way to steal, figure out a way to pay your obligations for stealing.

Being in California, you can expect a hefty CD.
Macys stopped the LP call back program, however they are very aggressive. Macys has a civil recovery center in Georgia if they can't collect, they send to Palmer and Associates. If Palmer can't collect, Macys gets it back and sues the shoplifter. Pay the Cd over time, I would recommend to pay in store and get the receipt from the register.
