Purchasing a Used Car That is Registered in a Different State
My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: I bought my daughter a used car today in Virginia, I think the person I purchased it from is military. The car is registered in Virginia with Virginia plates but the title is from California. Is this a red flag. I think the car was recently paid of and the lien release is signed at the bottom.
Re: Title in California Car Registered in Va
Probably no problem.
There is often an exception for transferring title if the serviceman's home of record is in another state. Not so with registration and insurance.
All you can do at this point is take the title to the DMV and see how it goes.
Re: Title in California Car Registered in Va
Something is WRONG. You can't register a car in Virginia without titling it in Virginia. If he has a Virginia registration, he should have a Virginia title. I'm having my doubts that he is giving you valid title. Normally, if it hadn't had Virginia plates, it would be straight forward, you bring a bill of sale and the out of state title signed over and proof of emissions inspection (if you're in one of the Northern Virginia counties or independent cities) to the DMV and get it issued.
Re: Purchasing a Used Car That is Registered in a Different State
I bey he transferred the car to VA, obtained a VA title and took out a title loan on the car. Once you register with the CA title in a year or so, you will have the sheriff knocking because you have a stolen car.
