I Shoplifted but Returned to Pay for the Item
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Kentucky

I shoplifted a rather large and fairly expensive ($160) item from a local retail store. I was not stopped by LP, there weren't any employees that witnessed the act either. I essentially got away. My concious has overcame me and this morning I visited the store to speak with a manager and pay for the item. I explained to the manager what happened and they understood and thanked me for coming forward. I payed for the item and was given a sales receipt.

Will there be any legal repercussions of what happened? I understand I broke the law by shoplifting, and I understand people here cannot forsee the future. However, will my actions of coming forward and paying for the item I lifted fall of deaf ears as it's already happened? Or has the cake already been baked?

    How did you pay?

Did they gather any personally identifiable information from you?

Was this a small store or a large corporation?

We cannot say what will happen. They may try and pursue it or they may not. The more information they have on you, thus making things easier for them, the more likely they might do something about it.

That's up to the store. They're still free to issue civil demands as well as making criminal complaint.

I just phoned the store and spoke with a manager (not the same one as earlier) and I was assured that everything was fine. I don't have anything in writing but I was assured that there wouldn't be any problems. I was advised that there wouldn't be any legal repercussions or anything awry as it was less than a 24 hour period.

Should I attempt to contact the manager I spoke with earlier and obtain something in writing that charges wouldn't be filed?

They do not have any personally identifiable information. I wasn't requested to give my name or driver's license. I paid with a prepaid credit card.

NO!!!!! Are you mad? You have NO legal grounds to stand on in...well, I'll be polite and say requesting...any such thing and the LAST thing you want to be doing is continue to bring yourself to the attention of the store.

You've dodged a bullet. Don't keep putting yourself in front of the guns.

They aren't going to charge you. Don't ever steal again.

I hate to compliment someone who did the wrong thing in the first place, but you did the honorable thing. Now just forget about it and move on.
