Unemployment After Quitting for Medical Reasons
My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: Illinois
I am considering quitting my job because i have a shifted disk in my back thats pressing on a nerve and causing severe pain in my back and leg, I am currently seeing a specialist for it and will most likely have to have surgery. I have told my boss and left work like 5 times now. The position i'm in requires a lot of bending and twisting and she wont move me. Can i get unemployment if i quit? At least until i get this fixed.

Quitting typically disqualifies you from UI.

Additionally, if you are not physically able to work during the time that you're receiving UI, you will be disqualified. You need to be mentally and physically able to work.

You should find another job before quitting.

Just a second here - while quitting generally disqualifies you from UI, you may be able to argue it if your employer has not made reasonable accommodations for your medical condition. Either way, you will have to file for UI, the State will question your employer, your employer will say you quit, and the State will deny your claim. Then you will appeal the State's decision, and be scheduled a hearing. That could take 3 months easily. So I would ask your employer to make some accommodations for you based on your medical conditions. If they are unwilling to, then I would suggest you find another, less physical job. I know in PA there are some conditions in which a person who quits is eligible for UI benefits. Those conditions are very specific and very narrow. I don't know if such provisions exist in IL U&I law.

It's MUCH easier to get unemployment if the employer lets you go than if you quit.
