    Underage Sister Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

    Hello everyone!

My sister is 16 and got caught shoplifting at our local target. She tried to steal $41 worth of stuff. She explained to me that she was very cooperative and answered the security guards questions.

They explained to me that she is not allowed to come back to that Target by herself (unless she with my parents) for a year. They also said I will receive a bill to pay off a fine. They did NOT call the cops, it was basically a very smooth process. No screaming, no scene was made, it was very calm.

    My questions are:
-how much will this bill be?
    -when should I expect this?
-how long do I have to pay it?
-will she have to go to court?
-will this be on her record?
-how will this affect her future?

I'm obviously very worried and I want to take care of this as soon as possible.

This is called a "Civil Demand" and the amount in Illinois is the cost of the merchandise (even if it is recovered at the time of the theft) plus an additional amount of not less that $100.00 nor more than $1,000.00. The time frame to pay is normally within 15-30 days after the first notice is received.

I suspect if the police were not called at the time of the theft she will not be going to court.
