What Happens if You're Caught Shoplifting but Give Everything Back
My question involves criminal law for the state of: shoplifting.

My best friend just got caught stealing an $80 bracelet from Belks by the tracking of her license plate. She told me that they caught her red handed in footage but I guess weren't quick enough to catch her before she left. So the police show up at her house on August 2nd and charge her for stealing the bracelet from belks on the 18th.

The day after the cop shows up, he agrees to come the next day to pick up all of her stolen goods and her stupid self gave the cop EVERYTHING SHE HAS EVER STOLEN. Not just what she got caught with but EVERYTHING. INCLUDING FROM ALL THE TIMES I WAS WITH HER AND OTHER FRIENDS. So she pretty much self incriminated herself right? And on Monday the 4th, she is going in for questioning and obviously they are going to ask when and where she got everything and who she was with and if they go back on the tapes and see me I do not want to be charged and questioned.

The week before she got busted on the 24th and 25th, we had gone to Belks two days in a row. The first day we didn't steal anything but the second day we stole a bunch of stuff including myself with her. HOWEVER, there was a power surge like 3 times while we were in there. All the other stores cash registers had gone out but my friend had bought a pair of pants from Belks to try to cover up the things we stole in there.

I'm freaking out because I stole something expensive and I want to return it but I have no idea if I should secretly just put it back on the rack or tell someone at the register that I had taken it or if I should try to actually buy it. I don't want to have ANYTHING stolen on me if the police have to confront me but hopefully my friend will keep her mouth shut and not mention me to the detective or anything I've taken.

Bottom line, I don't want the detective to like try to tell her that she won't have to plea guilty or something if she rats out her friends, because she got caught stealing when she was by herself. Yet she admitted to stealing tone before and now I'm super worried so WHAT SHOULD I DO?! I can't really contact her!

Keep your fingers crossed and stop stealing.

That is the problem when you are part of a theft ring. The police usually squeeze the one they catch for a better deal if they rat out other criminals.

Ok so I am done stealing for the rest of my life obviously. Lol but I think tomorrow before she gets questioned I am going to go back to Belks and return the sunglasses back on the rack and act like I am just trying some on so that way I don't have them in my possession anymore. Therefore can I still be in trouble? If she says I stole them could I dispute it? Because Belk's has them? But hopefully she won't say anything considering I won't have them anymore.

THIS SUCKS. I feel like she threw all of my friends under the bus by returning everything even from a long time ago because now if they look back they will see that me and another girl were with her and I don't want to get questioned.

You know what sucks? What really sucks is that you don't appear to have any understanding of the fact that you did wrong; you're in no way sorry for your wrongdoing and you're only afraid of getting caught. What's more, you've got no comprehension of what your friend is going through and your only concern is whether or not she's going to protect you from the same consequences that you've also earned.

I think that sucks big time, little girl, and you're getting no sympathy (or answers) from me. Spoiled little twit.

    THIS.

I hope they not only know who you are, but prosecute you as well.
