Debt Sold and is Now With Collections
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: NY
Years ago, I refused to pay a bank certain overdraft fees because of how they processed the payments. I closed the account because of this, owing them money. Years later, I believe they settled out of court for erroneous overdraft fees associated with how they processed payments. I was obviously not part of the suit and never received compensation.
My debt was sold and now collections agencies are contacting me. The first company i reported to the BBB because they repeatedly lied to me and were rude and disrespectful. They refused to send me paperwork and when I spoke to the bank, the debt was sold to another company.
Now another agency is contacting me. They said they would email me some docs, so I am waiting in that.
What recourse do I have? I feel I should not have to pay this money because it is based on the banks failure to properly process my payments. What can I do?
Is it too late to take the bank to court? Or can I fight the collections agencies?
Thanks

Let's start with the statute of limitations: How many years ago did this happen?

(And bear in mind the BBB has absolutely no power at all)

If you left the bank owing money, the person who bought the debt just wants their cut. They aren't gonna care.
