Can a 16 Year Old in the State of Georgia Become Emancipated
Hi im 16 and live in the state of georgia. I have a 9 year old sister and a 2 year old brother. Im raising them. I live with my parents in a house that we rent. My mom got fired and now sits at home doing nothing but yelling at me to do everything. My father is the only one who works and is never home because he works so much. He only gets paid every 2 weeks. My mother constantly bashes me for nothing. And does illegal substances before. I have seen her get them and been with her on an exchange before. She does them so often that she has seizures. Shes stolen medicine from my grandmother before as well. Were living off of food stamps. But the only proof i have is my word and my grandparents (both sets) when i try and talk to my father he yells at me. My mom has stolen money from me before as well. My grades have been slipping because more and more ive had to stay home to watch my siblings because of her. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to procide? Thank you

If you feel that you're being neglected or abused, you must contact someone in authority - your school counselor, child services, anyone like that.

You're not a candidate for emancipation.

Georgia has recently tightened up their requirements for a minor to be emancipated and it is now next to impossible. You have not indicated anything at all to suggest that you have even a prayer of being emancipated (which is NOT intended to take you out of the home, but to provide legal protections to those minors who are ALREADY living on their own and paying 100% of their own expenses). So don't expect emancipation; it's not going to happen.

Have you talked to a school counselor or pastor about what's happening? If not, do so.

    That's a great idea, Lilly.

    Keep doing what you're doing.

Emancipation isn't an option for you, but getting on with life is :)

    It's like this, Lilly.

Either you have a bad situation, or you don't. If it's not bad enough for your siblings to go into foster care, then it's not bad enough for the state to take any action or to take you out of the home before you're 18.

So getting the best education you can is pretty much your only option, if you won't talk to a counselor. Because the ONLY way anything is going to change, is if the state steps in.
