Ah, so, it's "fascist" when people who break the law (a law with far more serious consequences in most of the peace-loving free nations of Europe, by the way) flee the country? I seeee .... yeah, maybe we're better off without him. We have enough home-grown drunken drivers - we don't need to import them.

Perhaps you should look up two things: One, look up the true meaning of "fascist" and then ask yourself how that applies. Two, look up the term "Godwin's law" and then ask yourself why you already lost this "argument".

yes, we prefer when criminals do not come back to our country once they figure out how to escape justice here.

As the Fasces symbol appears on our currency, there is at least a bit of reason for accusing our republic of being a Fascist state.

Godwin's Law does not apply. There are tons of regimes that could be described as fascist, but have no connection to Nazism. Basically, any dictatorship that uses its near-absolute power to keep certain groups socially and economically superior to others is fascist.

There are some elements of totalitarianism present in our drunken driving laws that could be placing us on the road to Fascism. One of those elements is selective prosecution and punishment. George Bush was allowed to drive drunk without consequence because well-connected elites wanted to give him a political career. Ethan Couch was allowed to walk free after killing somebody due to drunken-driving.

As for Europe, its civilized nations are much better at rehabilitation than our nation. Their nations have a much more accessible train system and a much better prison system, one that allows frequent computer use for self-improvement and education for instance. We don't have that. We have a bunch of barely human HLN viewers cheering whenever they hear of prisoners getting beaten, tortured, and raped.

There are some ways we're better than Europe though. Europe persecutes religious dissidents a lot more than we do as murtad peoples and non-Muslims are often banned from defending themselves or their religious views, even with mere words. Look at how the British tried to persecute Geert Wilders. However, the winds of change are sweeping throughout the Western world on this issue for the advantage of religious liberty, albeit at a frustratingly slow pace.

Overall, Northwestern Europe appears to be a better place to live than America right now, especially for social minorities, but that could change.

    Persecute? ROFL.

Not quite, deary. You might want to a) read material about Geert Wilders which isn't cribbed from the European equivalent of Ermergerd-let's-totally-not-focus-on-the-real-issue websites; and b) well, I just happen to be European. From Northern Europe. As in, "Dude, I'm a Brit - get yourself a clue by four if you want to debate European politics".

    Good grief child.

His theory is not worth one thin dime. The Mercury dime was introduced in 1916. Mussolini did not found Italy's Fascist Party until 1921 and did not take power until 1922. Unless you're a Jonah Goldberg-brand expert on fascism, whereby you call people fascist without knowing that Mussolini was a fascist, the argument that the adoption of an Etruscan symbol for use on the dime before the world had any fascists stands as an absolute refutation that it's a symbol of fascism.

The philosophy of Fascism developed well-before Mussolini gave it a name. It goes back to ancient times.

And calm down, I said there was a bit of reason. I didn't say there was a lot of reason. Big difference. About the Fasces symbol:

    1) We continued to use the Fasces symbol on our dimes throughout WWII. We didn't stop until the war ended. Contrast with the Bellamy salute, which we stopped by the mid-to-late 1930's in most places. My guess is that the Fasces was not a high profile symbol of the Axis in our country at the time, which is why its use continued apparently unnoticed.

    2) Historians are hardly unanimous in declaring the Etruscans to be the inventors of the symbol. That's one of many theories. There just isn't enough archaeological evidence from the early Roman Republic(pre 450BC) to make a definitive conclusion. Since the evidence is gradually mounting in favor an Indo-European origin of the Minoans and the Labrys symbol, while evidence continues to mount in favor of a non-Indo-European origin of the Etruscans, it would be a difficult connection since many connect the Labrys to the Fasces.

    3) The symbol does appear to originally represent key tenets of the philosophy of Fascism. It symbolized the need for magistrates to execute people without trial sometimes to preserve the fabric of society.

    4) Wilson was the most fascist-leaning of any president in our history. He openly despised The Constitution, attempted to criminalize political speech, and courted the Ku Klux Klan for support in 1916.

Jonah Goldberg is a hack imho so we agree on that.

If you think the US is "fascist," you clearly have no real idea of what it is.

In the meantime, have fun in Europe. And, be sure to take advantage of their often ever-present mass transit system so that you will not be putting them at risk of harm when you drink.
