My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois
So I purchased a pair of shoes for $60.00. I then took off the tags and placed them on a different pair of shoes that I did not want anymore because they did not fit me. I would have returned them a long time ago but I removed the original tags and lost the reciept. Both pairs of shoes were purchased for approximately the same value from the same store. I went to the store to return the shoes with the transferred tags. They refused to take the shoes as a return because the tags do not match the item. I argued that the current tags on the shoes were that way when I purchased them and that it was not my fault if they were incorrectly tagged. The clerk then took my reciept and shoes and went into a back area for 5-10minutes. He came back with the reciept and shoes and informed me that they will not accept the return. I left the store without any loss prevention people stopping me. They do have my information because I tried to return the item to my credit card. I am wondering if a crime was commited because they refused to accept the return and no transaction took place? If they were going to pursue anything further, wouldnt the loss prevention people have talked to me or collected the item I tried to return as evidence? Or is it possible that loss prevention took photos of the shoes I tried to return as their evidence for use at a later date? I have never been arrested for anything ever in my entire life, and I am really paranoid that I am going to get a knock at my door from the police, or receive a large fine from the store.
