Avoiding Points in My Home State from an Out-of-State Traffic Ticket
My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Ohio
I was in Ohio on business last week and got a speeding ticket (4511.21D). I intend to pay the ticket but would like to avoid points on my California license (I haven't been ticketed in over 10 years).
I called the court and the clerk didn't seem to know what I was talking about.
Is it possible to take a remedial driving course to offset/hide any points?
Do I need to court's permission to do so?
Do I need to take a driving class in Ohio or California?
Will the Ohio municipal court recognize a CA online driving class?
I've trawled the web but can't find anything conclusive. I was hoping the court clerk would be able to help but she doesn't seem to know.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!
Re: Avoiding Points in My Home State from an Out-of-State Traffic Ticket
Ohio has various traffic school programs that relate to its own driving records and point system, but as an out-of-state driver you are subject to your own state's point system. They don't get you out of a ticket. As California's traffic school option is an alternative to getting convicted, it doesn't remove points from your license if you are convicted.
You should explore options that might let you resolve the ticket with a dismissal, or a conviction to an offense that does not carry points if abstracted to California.
Re: Avoiding Points in My Home State from an Out-of-State Traffic Ticket
I contacted my local California DMV office who put me in touch with the DMV Mandatory Actions Unit in Sacramento (916) 657 6525.
According to them; this is a very common request. Once the court rules; the National Driving Register (NDR) is updated with the number of points applied to a license. That information is then passed to the driver's local DMV. For California, these points can be masked by requesting the court to provide a letter with the following 4 items:
- Letter must be on court letterhead
- Must be signed and dated
- Must include the violation date
- Include the word 'dismissed'
Re: Avoiding Points in My Home State from an Out-of-State Traffic Ticket
OH does not have traffic school option to avoid conviction or points.

Which is what the Magistrate told me when I respectfully asked for his permission to do driving school in CA. So no bueno.
Wouldn't have been any skin off his nose. I would have still pled guilty and paid the fine in full. Oh well. It was worth a shot.
