I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Ohio
For the past couple years my parents have been on heroine really bad, they've been taken to jail and left me on my own. I am 16 years old, so without hesitation i called my sister to live with her. I've already lived with her in the past, and it didn't work out at all. There was never any food, and she always had me babysit. But i'm now living with her again and it's the same as last time, theres never any food, and im always babysitting her kid. Obviously there is other family options for me to live with, like my grandmother, aunt, etc. But i've been with my girlfriend for two years, and i would rather deal with starving and putting up with babysitting for a couple more years if it means i couldn't live with her. I guess the main question is, if my girlfriends father took my sister to court for her parents to get custody of me, would it work? They are both hard working people, always food there, very smart people, all of there kids are in college, make great money and there is a bedroom for me already for when i go and stay. I'm sorry if this is a long post, this has just been going on for too long and i want a good life.. thank you for taking the time to read this.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
No. It wouldn't work. There isn't a judge in the country that would give custody to your girlfriend's family when there are members of your family available to take you.
-
Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Ahhhh, how sweet. Sorry no court is going to emancipate you to shack up with your girlfriend.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
What the hell is wrong with you guys? Here is a 16 year old person with drug addicted parents that is falling between the cracks and all you can do is say no, no, no?
Kid, go talk to social services or youth and family services or whatever it is called in your state about your problem. You deserve to have a stable home and support. They will help you but you have to go and contact them.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Budwad, learn to read. Better yet, learn the law.
The answer to the specific question the poster asked IS No. He asked very specifically whether or not custody could be given to his girlfriend's father. The answer to that IS No. Whether you or the poster likes it or not.
If you LOOK at what I told him, you'll see that I suggested that alternate family placement COULD happen. No one said that he was stuck forever where he is, only that the SPECIFIC solution he wanted is not going to happen. And it isn't.

Hold on a second. His complaint was that he had to babysit and that there was "no food". With a teenager, almost always "no food" translates to "no food that I want to eat". As far as babysitting goes, that is completely normal. He also said that he would rather put up with that if he cannot live with his girlfriend. He also is not living with his drug addicted parents. They are in jail. He is living with his older sister.
This is not a situation where the teen is being neglected. If we thought it was, we would have already advised him to talk to his school counselor or social services.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Point of order, not to be discriminatory, but factually correct. I believe this is a girlfriend-girlfriend relationship. I read into this that older sister is not real fond of said relationship.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Could be, but irrelevant to the legal answer to the question.

One might ask the same of you. Did you not learn reading comprehension in school, or is your failure to comprehend a result of an overarching desire to be outraged?

We do accurate legal information here, not "blow sunshine up people's asses". The answer to the question of "Can my girlfriend's father take my sister to court for custody of me" is NO. Not just here in Ohio, but in every state of the Union.
Kiddo already acknowledges s/he has the option of living with an aunt or grandmother, but simply does not want to. There is no "falling through the cracks" here.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
I concur, it was a hypothesis guessing OP's desire to live with a friend but not another relative despite their claim of dangerous circumstances. One tends to regard the safety of a female teen being more of a concern than that of a male teen and their reactions different for physical and emotional reasons.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Alrighty, thanks guys. And i don't think some of you quite understand, i don't get payed for babysitting. She wakes me up everyday early to babysit ALL day. My father gets a social security check, i get 400$ from it, she gets it all and spends it. I don't get anything. Doesn't buy food with it, or anything. And for whoever said something about no food i like? would you like me to take a picture of my empty cabinets? My empty fridge with jugs of Fosset water? I'm not some immature 16 year old that's spoiled and gets pissed when he doesn't get what he wants. The question was can her father get custody of me, i want a normal life i'm tired of living like a built in maid. The answer is No, so i'll put up with it. Thank you for all of your answers.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Get a job. Buy your own food.
-
Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
How can one get a job when i'm always babysitting?
-
Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
What makes you think you're entitled to any of your father's social security check?
-
Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
My father gets one, and i get one. He gets 1100 and i get 400. He has cancer so i'm pretty sure it's for that, i'm not sure. Sorry for the inconvenience.

My social security check is supposed to be used to buy me clothes, food, and help with the bills. She uses 200$ to help with some bills, then uses the rest for her own personal use. This last month she used most of it for a tattoo.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Did you have shelter, running water, and minimal food last month? Then as far as the law is concerned, THAT's where it went. Who is paying for the internet service you're using to make these posts? Whose desk are you sitting at? Whose chair are you sitting IN? See where that's headed?

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
I'm using my hotspot off my phone for internet, which my grandmother pays for. Yes, we have water. But i'm tired of drinking nothing but fosset water. And the only food i get is the change i scavenge up to buy packs of ramon noodles from the store down the block. And i'm not sitting in a chair, i'm actually on a baby mattress that's on the floor that i use for a bed. I don't understand why this is escalating to something other than the main question i've asked. Quit trying to make it look like i have it good when in all reality i don't, i'm constantly angry, sad, and i feel abandoned. The last time i told my sister no to babysitting my nephew so she could go play "pool with her friends for a couple hours" it turned into a massive argument which she threatened to get me for unruly. You guys have answered my question, that's that. Thank you once again for your answers. That's all i wanted.

I'm not sure if "fosset" is a brand of water or are you saying that the only water you have to drink comes from the faucet? If the latter, that's fine. There are tons of people in this world who only drink water from the faucet. I'm not a fan of it, but my husband thinks it's great.
Otherwise, if the conditions are truly as bad as you have indicated, look for the number of the local Department of Children's Services. Tell them you're being neglected. If they come to the house and see what you're describing, then they will put you in foster care where they will hopefully have food (but I can't guarantee anything other than faucet water because there is no law anywhere that says they have to provide you with bottled water).

sorry but I loves my fosset water.
and if you want to hear some things that would make you question ever drinking water from a municipality again, just let me know.
the fact sister wakes up OP every morning and OP babysits all day tells me OP is doing absolutely nothing else with their life. Obviously sister got along without OP before so I presume she can again if needed. It's likely OP was simply sitting around the house eating everything (and then complaining there was no food (left)) so sis said; if you are going to be here, you are not going to just sit around the house all day and eat everything. At 16 you are going to earn your keep.
but hey, it's not like I've never been 16 or had any 16 year old kids so I probably have no idea what I am talking about.

The thought of drinking water from a municipality absolutely makes me quiver, however what do I know? I'm originally from CA, no one drinks the city water. I just brought that habit over this way to the other side of the country.

You my friend, got it all wrong. She hasn't worked in 6 months. All she does is party. I'm moving in with my grandma until everything is situated. I came here to seek help, with ONE question and you people change the subject on everything. I have no idea why you guys are being rude, i know i'm not being rude. And if i wasn't here, my sister would be miserable because she is a deadbeat mother who wants nothing to do with her child most of the time, that's why i stay around for the most part. And "Simply sitting around the house eating everything" And complaining there is no food? I've previously said this before, there IS NO FOOD. You guys act like i live here for free when in all reality the social security paycheck that i get that is supposed to be used to help me get along for clothes, food, etc. It's not even being used properly. I wish more than anything to get a job, i would love to get a job. But how can i get a job if i'm constantly at this house doing nothing but watching my nephew. You guys twist my words around in every way possible to make me look like a spoiled little brat who doesn't get what he wants, oh and Jk newsflash, i don't care about how you're teenage life was or your daughter/son. Clearly you don't have a clue what you are talking about because that was the most idiotic reply i've seen, it seems to me that you haven't read anything i've even said to be completely honest. I'm tired of coming back here and seeing all this hate directed towards me, so is there anyway to close this thread? If it's possible it would be nice. Thank you for not helping me AT ALL. Goodbye.

Re: I Want to Live with My 16 Year Old Girlfriend
Not helping = didn't give me the answer I wanted
Since you're moving in with your grandmother, that should solve most of your problems even if you don't get to live with your girlfriend.

Fosset (I thought of Bob Fossey myself) issues aside, and I know it sounds really weird (if not downright hypocritical) coming from me but please can we ease off on this one?
S/he hasn't come back with that much rudeness...s/he's actually taken reality pretty well on the whole.

Oh. Well then.
I'd erase the last bit, but being the quintessential (I wish that was possible in Scrabble) and resident lazy git, I won't.
(Mind you I still think she'd have reacted better if - and let's be honest - we hadn't drown her first)

no food yet you have the strength to type on your keyboard. NO food means you starve. How are you alive if there is NO food and you can't go anywhere because you have to watch your niece/nephew so regularly you can't go out and get a job.
hopefully your grandparents will have some food around the house but be prepared. If it says Whiska's on it, well, you know how old people are.
and just how far do you think $400 goes for food, clothes, and anything else you need? Hell, I spend more than half that a week for food alone. Rib-eye steaks aren't cheap ya know. And dang, when I splurge on that Wagyu; Jeez, darn near $100 a pound. Can you imagine a steak that costs $100? and you still have to cook the damn thing. I'm telling ya. I don't know what the world's coming to.
