Steps to Take After Getting Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

The other day I was caught shoplifting at target. I had 80$ worth of merchandise and was walking out the door when I was stopped and taken to the LP room. I had no idea what to do and was told to sign a paper saying "what happened today". So without thinking I signed it. When the police arrived, I was given a 120$ bond. The LP guy kept telling me that it wasn't a big deal and that it was like a slap on the wrist. The officer also said that I would have to go to court and that information would be sent in the mail. This is my first offense and I am 18. I also live at home with my parents, but do not want them involved. The LP said I could get through this without letting them know. How would I get a public defender/attorney and how much would it cost? I have no idea what I am doing right now. Any advice would be appreciated.

18, you are now an adult.

You would be best advised to hire a Criminal Defense Attorney in your area, and ask for a First Time Offender program.

Do you know how much approximately all of this will cost? Also, how would I go about getting a defense attorney? Should I just look online for one around my area?

Ever see the sign in WalMart's fitting rooms and bathrooms that say shoplifting is a not a joke, a thrill, or a prank and can cost you $2000?

A lawyer averages $1500, more or less. Court costs and court fines. Civil Demand from the store/it's lawyers.

You really want a lawyer and first time offender program. Otherwise you will be having a hard time finding a job for many years; apartments may refuse to rent to you; you may screw many college degrees.....
