What Happens to Shoplifters When They Go to Court
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Florida. I am a 27 years old mother of one and i got caught shoplifting in walmart a few days ago. The total amount added up to $55. The cops were called because it was over the limit for me to just deal with walmart. I was told that i should get a letter in the mail in two weeks to see when my court date is. I know that it was stupid to do what i did and i will never do it again. but i was wondering what is going to happen to me? where do i go from here? also this is my first offence, never been arrested or in trouble for anything.

Court costs and fines. A lawyer is recommended to see if you qualify for a First Time Offenders program.
And the stores lawyers will be sending you a Civil Demand letter for some money.

Will this be on my record? If so what would i be charged with?
Re: What Happens to Shoplifters When They Go to Court
Yes, this will be on your record. And you may also be in the National Retail Theft Database for 7 years.
Which is why you want a lawyer. You want to minimize the damage as much as possible, and a First Time Offenders Program would mean after a certain probationary period, you would have this record sealed, and not visible to any potential employer (or anyone with $10 who can go online and look you up).
You would be charged with Retail Fraud. As this is a crime of moral turpitude, again, I suggest a Criminal Defense Attorney. Even apartment buildings can refuse to rent to someone convicted of such a crime.
