Can Your Parents Sue You for Medical Bills They Paid During Your Childhood
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Tennessee

When I was a minor (age 14) I had an accidental overdose resulting in being hospitalized. Shortly after I recovered it was brought to my attention that my mother was planning on suing me once I reached the age of 18 and acquired a sum of money that my grandmother left for me after she passed.

Can she do this? Am I legally obligated to pay her back? Can she sue me for everything?

Parents have a duty to provide medical care to their children. I am uncertain as to what she could claim that requires you to contribute to that care.

She can attempt to sue, sure. But there's a big difference between filing suit and winning the suit.

Your parents are 100% responsible for everything when you are under the age of 18 - food, shelter, education, medical care. They don't get to sue for reimbursement later.

Would I be wasting money fighting her?

    She wants 10 grand.

    On what grounds?

If she files suit - provided she finds an attorney who doesn't laugh right in her face - retain counsel. Your attorney will draft a very polite answer for the court that essentially tells your mother to drop dead. If it even gets that far. And if by some wild streak of absurdity, it actually goes to trial, I would be shocked beyond belief if she got anything more than a stern lecture from the judge.

Tell her it is only legal to subtract it from your inheritance from her and dad, not grandma.

I honestly don't see how. I wonder though...are the bills for that incident something that is still hanging over mom's head and that is why she wants the 10k? Is your mother in an actual financial bind over outstanding bills from that incident? I don't know how much money you are going to inherit, but I would tend to want to help my mom if the bills were stilling hanging over her head.

No she's absolutely fine. She just had to pay that money and is upset that she lost it.

But if she was to be "in debt" then what? Am I legally obligated to take care of it?

(The only reason I'm hesitant is because she's lied to me about the inheritance, how much money I owed her, and when I would get my inheritance - several times and I don't want to get screwed because my mom fooled me again.)

No, I wasn't suggesting that you were legally obligated to take care of it. Its just something that I would have done if my mother had debt hanging over her head for a dumb move I made as a teenager.
