How Long Can a Homeless Child Be Out of School Before Truancy Charges Are Filed
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Michigan. My sister was evicted from her home this week and I am keeping her daughters ages 14 and 15 for a short time while she gets herself together. I live a long way from where they are enrolled in school. There is no way to get them back and forth. How long does my sister have before she will have truancy charges filed against her? Also, can I be held responsible for their truancy because they are sleeping at my house? Are there any exceptions for them because they are homeless? Thanks for any help you can give

Is there some reason they can't be enrolled in school where you are?

Only that they won't be here long and I have no legal guardianship. I don't think that when she finds housing it will be in the school district I live in. She also has three boys ages 11,12, and 17 who are staying with my mother in a different school district. I have no experience with anything like this. My only daughter does her schooling from home online so I am clueless.

how long is too long is up to the school attendance officer or person acting in that capacity of the school they are registered in. Once that person detrmines it has been "too long" (which is actually determined by the individual schools policy) they give notice to the parent. If the issue is not resolved, they file a court action...things are then dealt with through the courts after that.

exceptions? no. consideration of the fact; possibly.

Have you spoken to anybody in the school they are registered? I suspect the school may be relieved to know the children are not in danger if their mother has given the school no information regarding the situation. Many of them really are concerned about their students and when they just go missing, in this day and age, some pretty gruesome thoughts may come to mind.
