Caught Shoplifting at a Department Store
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Maine
Yesterday, I was caught outside of Khols for shoplifting about $50 (not taking the sales price) of 3 necklaces. They brought me to the room and I signed a paper saying I could not return unless my mom was with me, they called the cops and he told me I had a court date in about 3 weeks. I am terrified, I feel awful for what I attempted to do, I can't say I'm sorry enough. I just need to ask how much will this cost overall, I am excepting overall costs of $550 praying for nothing more. Also since i am 16 will this go on my record, like when I go to a job interview will they see it? Will getting a lawyer help or is it not worth the money? Please help in answering any of my questions if you can.
Re: Regretful Shoplifting at Khols Department Store
Sometimes God gives us a path to redemption. This is your moment. Is this the person you want to be? After you earn the money to pay the civil demand and possibly obtain diversion with community service through the court, you have a chance at redemption. This will not follow you into adulthood if you do not reveal it. That said, another transgression will likely be delayed by the court so it shows on your adult record and you will be screwed for life.
The time to decide who you want to be is now.

To expand on that, I shoplifted 5 years ago. I'm an adult. Being an adult with a criminal record has held me back from MANY jobs - staffing agencies won't take anyone with a record. I can't work in places like Senior Centers, Senior Living facilities. Retail is pretty much screwed. Can't work in a bank or in a stores cash office.

Criminals always sing that song after they get caught.
Committing crimes doesn't seem to bother them before they get caught.
I suggest you consult an attorney before you go to court. That'll cost you some but that's just part of the cost of the life lesson you are about to learn.
Re: Caught Shoplifting at a Department Store
I suggest that you and your parents work with a local lawyer who handles juvenile court matters to find out what local court policies are, and what sort of outcomes are likely to follow given those policies, along with your home, school, community and (if applicable) prior police record.
