    Caught Shoplifting at Safeway
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Arizona
So I got busted shoplifting at safeway its was under $10 I know it was stupid. So the LP guy stopped me out of the store asked me to come back in. Sat me down his "office" I gave him my licence ( it had a old address on it). I gave him a fake address and a fake SS# but i"m sure he wrote down my DL#. My question is: Is there anything they can do with just my Drivers License #? I am planning going to the DMV and reporting my DL lost/stolen. OR should I pay the fine? They told me how much it was going be and where to send it but it is $260 i dont really have.

Sorry, the "help the shoplifter add fraud to his crimes" department is four doors down and to the left.

Well, they were nice and didn't have you arrested on the spot. Since you gave a fake address and SSN, they just may decide to send their file to the police. So better call the store and give your real info, and do it asap.

And reporting your DL lost/stolen isn't going to help, you're just going to end up paying for a new license with your correct address and the SAME DL NUMBER on it.

Also, you can call and make payment arrangements (installments).

My impression was that his plan was to report the license stolen and then claim someone else must have given that license to the LP.

To the OP, assuming that was your plan, all it would take is the LP officer identifying that you were the person who he caught, or reviewing the video where they could clearly see you were the one. If you were to make the statement in court that your DL was stolen and some one else presented it to LP and LP proved it was you you would have a whole new can of worms.

If you had provided him with your actual information there is a good chance you would have received a civil demand and been out of this with nothing more than a couple hundred dollars out of pocket. You provided more than enough information for the cops to find you if the store presses charges. You have complicated this situation enough. At this point you can either call the store, apologize, and hope for the best, or stay away from the store, and hope for the best. Either way it is up to the store if they press charges and I am not sure one situation is better than the other.

Anything else you do to try to cover your tracks is likely to come back to bite you.

And...he probably did not think that LP likely has evidence like video that would show it was him, and he likely forgot they took a photo in the LP room.

Oh...and that when LP looked at the DL, they would have also made sure the person matched the photo.
