How Long After You Leave Property With Somebody is it Considered Abandoned

My question involves personal property located in the State of: Louisiana & Kentucky

Is my property really "abandoned" if I intended on getting it back the entire time?

To make a long story my ex-boyfriend is in possession of a very expensive item of mine, but he claims since it's been at his mother's house for so long that it's hers. I always intended to get this item back and I have made several attempts to get it sent back here on MY dime of course, but it hasn't gotten done. At first he said he would send it, only if I agreed to give him everything I had purchased for him during the relationship. Naturally I was reluctant to do so, but now I feel it's my only option to get my property back. I've tried to contact him several times, but he refuses to even answer at this point. The item in question is a very expensive acoustic guitar which I have proof of ownership through the receipt and pictures of it here. I also have proof that he had it in October at least, because I had him send a picture to me. The guitar has been there for at least 4 years, but as I stated above I've made several attempts to get it back even before the split (In October of last year). Is there anything I can do about this? If I have proof of ownership and made attempts to get it returned, I didn't abandon it, did I? The guitar is currently in Kentucky, and I'm in Louisiana.

Why have you chosen not to contact the person who holds the guitar to arrange its return, rather than dealing with your ex-?

My ex lives with his mother. I've tried to contact both of them and they refuse to answer me at all. It's gotten to the point of me feeling like a stalker because I've sent many messages to both of them without any response. I'm not sure what else to do.
