Diversion: She pays for the Diversion Program, which would include fines, likely Community Service, and a term of probation. It may also include things like an anti-shoplifting class; shoplifters anonymous meetings; random drug/alcohol testing. After everything is completed, her criminal record is sealed. Diversion is like a First Time Offenders program, and you only get it once. Screw up during the probation period or don't complete everything as sentenced - then it reverts to what the original sentence would have been.

Expungment: For me, in Michigan....I shoplifted nearly 5 years ago. I was convicted of a lesser charge (Disturbing the peace) under a plea deal. Come mid-April, I file for Expungment which seals my record after all this time.

Next: She needs to be honest with her lawyer.

As for her job, yes, there is the chance of losing it.
