    Changing a Child's Name From Her Father's
My question involves name change laws in the State of: Maryland I had my daughter in virginia and her father at the time was present yet he did not sign her birth certificate and being young and what I thought was love I made the mistake of giving her his last name. He no longer is apart of either of our lives and has been out of the picture for a while. I would rather not have her carry on with the last name of a stranger. How would I do this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

You file a motion with the court of jurisdiction. They may or may not agree her fathers name needs to be changed.

    Info here: http://www.mdcourts.gov/family/forms/drin62.pdf

You'll have to serve him and publish notice. Obviously he gets to contest the change. The judge will decide what is in the best interest of the child (if the child is a year old or older).
