My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia.
I'm a resident of Virginia, and I have been recently charged with Harassment by Computer (http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...d+18.2-152.7C1). My record thus far is clean. If I plead guilty, what do you assess my chances are of avoiding jail time? A Class 1 Misdemeanor carries a maximum fine of $2,500 and 12 months in jail.

You should discuss the full facts of the alleged offense with a criminal defense lawyer from your county, and discuss possible resolutions that might be more favorable, including the possibility of a plea to a lesser charge or a deferred sentence. In the abstract, for somebody facing a one year misdemeanor with no particularly egregious circumstances or prior criminal history, odds would favor probation, fines and court assessments.

You get an attorney, and you plead Not Guilty. That allows your attorney to try to bargain things down. Pleading Guilty forces the court to impose sentence. Not necessarily the maximum, but certainly harsher than if you have the advice of counsel.
I am glad this question was brought up. As an aside, what do state(s) and federal laws say about two people who are communicating with anon names? I am assuming if both people are actual people posting with their with real names, it is a fairly black and white legal issue. However in cases where either one or both people communicating are anon using anon avatars or handles or what ever you want to call it, what do the laws state?
In other words if two people who are communicating on a discussion board and supposed harassments are made, and both are anon, what does the law say?
The reason why I am asking this question is because years ago I remember reading that France was instituting some kind of a law - I am not sure if I have this correct - but they were instituting some kind of a law that would make it illegal for anyone to post on a discussion forum unless they used their real name and I am sure I don't have my facts straight. But anyway I was curious what any legal expert might have to say on this subject thanks.
