Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault Against a Child
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois.

A person I knew at the church I used to attend was conviced of some serious sex offenses about ten years ago. I'm looking at his sex offender registry page and it reads that the victim was 6, he was 45 and there are 9 counts of predator criminal sexual assaut. He has never served jail time. It seems unfathomable to me that someone could do something like that and get such an easy sentence, does anyone have any insight as to how that could happen?

Also, is there any way to search court documents (via a FOIA perhaps)? The most consise answer I could get would be to read the court papers.

Take a look at the minimum sentence for that offense, 720 ILCS 5/11-1.40. Perhaps you are looking at the original charges, not the actual disposition.

Wouldn't the actual disposition be the charges listed on the registry? No gets stuck on that list for being accused of something.

If he's on the registry, he was convicted of something that requires registration. Beyond that, I can't tell you more without a name.

That's something I obviously can't provide. What can I do to further research this?

Do you mind if we ask why you want to know so badly?

The authorities tend to frown on people playing Batman, after all.

I used to have a lot of respect for the guy. Other than that there's no deep reason, I just want to know how it happened.

Past that I could give a crap what the police think as long as it's legal. edit: As long as it won't hurt me on a top secret clearance background check, those are a very real possibility for my line of work.

Maybe there was a lack of physical evidence and they needed the kid to testily. He probably did something horrible wrong but maybe he was overcharged also. The da might of figure now he can be watched and he probably is on probation. (one slip up he can be sent to jail or prision). He could appear guilty but maybe if they took it to trail there was reasonable doubt. All we really can do is guess,he probably also had an excellent lawyer. Could always ask the guy himself.

criminal cases are public in this country. You go down to the courthouse and talk to the clerks there about how you research the cases and ask for copies of the records.

The names of the victims should be redacted, but the names of the perps are not.
