Gaining Custody of My Stepchild from Her Father
My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Pennsylvania
So my wife's ex boyfriend has been in and out of jail and is currently in Prison in Colorado, he had said years ago he wants to give up his right as a father as he wants nothing to do with her. I had gone to a lawyer but it seems like a lot of money for something contested. Are there steps I could take without using a lawyer? Thanks

If you are looking to do a step parent adoption yes you will need a lawyer.

If we are in fact talking about stepparent adoption, here's a quick overview (offered with no endorsement of the firm). You posted this as a child custody question, though. To the extent that your wife wishes to modify the existing custody order, she may petition the custody court to modify the order. Getting third party rights through a custody court tends to be cumbersome, even if dad is in jail and cooperative.
