Changing a Child's Full Name When the Father is Not Around
My question involves name change laws in the State of: tx
My child is 3 and named after his father who is no longer in the picture. How do I change his name based on that information? I have heard that I can put an announcement in the newspaper to prove that I have tried to contact him, is that true?

father not around...meaning what? Do you know where he is? Does he pay child support? Has he even been established as the legal father?

yes, he is on birth certificate we broke up about a year ago and have not heard or seen him since. I have no idea where he is. I have not filed for child support but planned on doing so.

You really ought to try to find him, but if you can not, they you can serve him by publication to get the name change in front of a judge. The judge will determine if the name change is in the best interest of the child and the public.
