Can Emancipation Get You Better Financial Aid
My question involves guardianship in the State of: Indiana
My question pertains to my boyfriend. He's 18, lives with his parents, but he pays for everything besides food and rent. He pays for his truck and gas money and etc. He is also expected to pay for college. His parents make too much money for him to qualify for certain scholarships, but he himself won't make enough money to pay for college without having to take out major loans. I talked to other students and they said their parents are emancipating them so they can have more money for college. My question is is this possible? If so how does one go about this in the right manner? And If not what other legal options are there?

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
Legal emancipation is different than FAFSA emancipation. There's no such thing as legal emancipation of someone over 18, they already are not under any legal disabilities.

they or their parents are lying. Read FAFSA's rules. They are pretty clear as to what it takes to financially emancipate the student for purposes of FAFSA and it doesn't happen by a parent simply making the statement they aren't going to help their kids with college costs.

Well, why wouldn't he be? He's a legal adult, and anything that you want after you reach legal adulthood is your responsibility. He can do like hundreds of thousands of other people, and attend classes part-time while he works.
Your friends have not been emancipated by their parents for the purposes of financial aid. That's not what emancipation is, and not what it's for.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
Its not the fact that he has to pay for it himself, its his parents make too much money. how fair is it your parents income is going to reflect the sort of assistance you get to pay for higher education, especially if they aren't going to help?

where does he live? Does he receive any assistance for food, shelter, medical treatment, anything from his parents? If so, he is benefiting from his parents income and as such, has more money to pay for school with. He is getting assistance to pay for higher education if he receives any of the items I mentioned.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
That's as of now. 6 months from now he will be miles away not living off his parents. rent bills medical help the whole nine yards. So what everyone is saying is there are no kind of loopholes besides military, marriage, having a kid, or being 24+ years old (because that's the cut off age not 18). You just have to do it yourself or hope your parents it the lottery and give you $50,000 off the top!? Why does this not seem right? Kids our age are being told the only way to make it is if you have a college degree but you graduate without a career and a ton of debt.

Where do you think government money comes from, child? The taxpayers, that's who. Why should we shell out for his education?

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
so, are you saying he is actually moving out of his parents home with ALL assistance being removed or is this distant place where he will have to pay rent and all part of his schooling situation?
-
Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
He is going away for school. He won't be living with his parents, and they aren't going to be sending him anything.

Re: Can Emancipation Get You Better Financial Aid
Then he better get a job to support himself.

and the claim of dependent on his parents tax returns?
Is he going to return to the family home for school breaks?
after the school year?
if/when he graduates?
If he is truly financially independent (and the fact he lives with them now proves he isn't), he can speak with the financial aid director at his school. They have the power to treat him as financially independent if they believe it applies.

You just have to do it yourself
Yes?
That's what I did. Worked two full-time jobs AND a part-time job, went to school, and supported myself 100% - and I do mean 100%. I didn't even go back to my grandparents' to do laundry. What makes your boyfriend so special that I should have to help pay his tuition because he doesn't want to have student loans?
Being a grown-up sucks. Buy a helmet and power through, it isn't going to get any easier and it's best to grasp an understanding of that NOW.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
Trust me I know that being a grown up sucks so, you can hop off your high horse lady. You are going beyond the question like I'm knocking on your door asking for donations to the "Feed The Hungry Boyfriend Fund" I'm not! Regardless of where your tax money goes its paying for someone's something, whether its education, welfare, health care, useless research projects put on by the government, and etc. Welcome to America! I'd think a self-made woman like yourself would know that... Its basic high school government, which is, again, way off topic from the question I asked. So if you don't have a relevant or helpful answer stop replying and find something more productive to do with your time.
And to everyone else who has contributed replies that actually answer my question thank-you. It has been appreciated. I'll cross this idea off the list, hit the drawing board, and find another way to help; instead of antagonizing people with anecdotes of my "oh so successful life"!
Thanks again.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
The best way you can help is to tell him to pull up his big boy panties and get a job.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
By "relevant and helpful", she means "Please hand both money and a "how-to" on that silver platter for me please"?
-
Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
The bottom line is that there just isn't a whole lot of free money out there. If parents aren't paying for it and he's not willing to take student loans, then the only other option is EARNING it.
-
Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
Excuse me, but you know nothing about me. So you can take your money, your how-to guide, and your silver platter and shove it where the sun don't shine.
Much Appreciated, Have a WONDERFUL life!:*
End of discussion. Thank you again for those who supplied actual answers to my questions, and not your smart ass opinions.

Re: If You Are Emancipated Can You Get More Money from the State for College
Sweetie, I don't have to know anything about you to read what you're asking. You asked the question - we gave you the answer. He can go looking for scholarships, and he might even find some. But the simple fact is, you don't get government money handed to you because you don't want to take money from other sources. You just don't. And all your smartassery isn't going to change that. His first and best option is not to wait for someone to give him money - even the majority of scholarships require that you WORK. So once again, tell Mr. Wonderful to get his ass in gear and be prepared to actually perform some labor in exchange for money. He may as well learn it now because after he gets that education no one is going to pay him money to sit on his ass either - he'll be expected to provide value in exchange for a paycheck too.

No, darling, you don't get to decide that. We do, when we're bored of laughing at you and your foot-stomping.
