Yep. Been there, living it. I only did it because I was taking care of my grandmother, who was a real witch. She required round the clock care. Leave on own, I could be charged with Elder Abandonment. On the other hand, she always said if I did anything wrong she would kick me out.....
Again, I really don't mean to sound harsh, but yes....one stupid mistake = you will not be a Government Worker. You really do need to talk to your Vocational Rehab Counselor. Mine knows about my mistake, but again, it was almost 5 years ago now.
Last year, Vocational Rehab would not help me unless I did 60 days counseling. A year later, applied again, new counselor, only a complete psych eval and 10 counseling sessions to be more assertive.
Toys R Us, McD's will hire those with a misdemeanor. You are younger than me, so you have other options out there.
With your disability, it will be harder. I am hearing impaired and up until August had a 20 lb lifting restriction, so it's been really tough on me to find work. You may be blind, but if you can hear well, may I recommend a Call Center job?
Staffing Agencies - all I can say is call and ask upfront before wasting your time filling out the ap and taking all the typing/software testing.
May I ask how much the merchandise in your case was worth? And how your vocational rehab councilor acted, did they terminate services that day,mor did they wait?
Don't get too discouraged. While there will be restrictions on what you can do, there are employers who are more than willing to give a second chance to applicants who may have made a single mistake, but who are upfront about it. If you are honest about what happened and willing to talk about how you have learned from the experience, that will get you further than trying to hide it. Many employers are willing to forgive a single mistake - few will forgive being lied to.
Mine was $40 or so. I was not working with Vocational Rehab at the time. But when I tried to work with them last year, which was 3.5 years past the conviction, they wanted 60 hours of counseling.
I re-applied in late August 2013, new counselor. 10 counseling sessions to learn to be more assertive. My counselor said I am assertive to everyone but family, so....1 down, 9 to go....
Thank you.
Talk to your Vocational Rehab counselor and see what she has to say.
