Is it Harassment if Somebody Keeps Trying to Talk to Me at My House
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois
Hi all, I moved into this new house 4 months ago with my wife.
A few weeks after I moved in, I noticed an elderly woman came to my home and rang the bell, I didn't answer because I don't answer for strangers.
About once a week for the past 4 months this previous owner of my house comes and rings my bell, I know it's the previous owner because my neighbor told me her license plate #. She leaves notes, and I have observed her trespassing threw my yard, she even presses her face up to the glass and looks into my home. I let these things slide before because I thought she was harmless. But yesterday she came again, rang the doorbell and stood there for a good 5 minutes, but then I hear my doorknob being moved and the woman was pushing my front door a bit to see if it was open. I am enraged that this weirdo thinks she can walk through my yard, look into my house and try to see if I left the door unlocked. My wife told me not to call the police because the woman is elderly and I should "let it go". But now I'm sitting here a day later angry at myself for not calling the police and reporting her. I cannot believe this woman has the gull to stare into my home and try to open my door, god knows what the wack job would try to do. I refuse to open the door for her because plain and simple... I owe her nothing. I am busy with work and don't have time for this nonsense. And this behavior of hers makes me feel good about my decision not to speak to her.
It makes me so angry that she tried to see if she could open my door twice!
Furthermore she is a COMPLETE STRANGER and I don't know what she would do.
What should I do >?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
Talk to her and find out if she has a mental problem that she keeps coming back. What do the notes say?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
Do you have any creditors who might be chasing you?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
What do her notes say? Why are you afraid to talk to her?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
I wonder if she was forced out of the home due to bankruptcy and misses her old home?
I would step outside and talk to her, and just tell her that it's your home now, you understand she misses her old home (any idea how many years she lived there?), but that her coming to the home is making you uncomfortable, and if she comes back then you will have a talk with the police.....
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
I wonder if she left a fortune in gold in the attic and wants to retrieve it?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
I wonder why you find an elderly woman so threatening?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
I wonder why he's never responded to the wonderful responses he has received?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
As I mentioned in the title, I would like to know if it is harassment for somebody to repeatedly walk uninvited to my front door, peer in through multiple windows of my house, traipse through the my fenced yard (she entered through the closed gate), ring the doorbell multiple times, and jiggle the door handle in an attempt to open the door. While this old woman was the previous owner, she has no claims to my house or property now, and she apparently owned it over 5 years ago, as I purchased it from a different owner. While her behavior was annoying originally, it seemed harmless, and until this last time, I had only seen her car as I was pulling back up to the house or heard the doorbell once or twice while I was working from home. However, the last time she unexpectedly stopped by, my wife (who hardly ever works from home and has not experienced this before) was on a business call, and the old woman repeatedly rang the bell and then began to jiggle the handle to see if the door was unlocked. My wife was obviously busy and could not get to the door, and then she was scared while she was on the phone because somebody started to jiggle the handle. The old woman then proceeded around the side of the house, through the gated fence, and peered in multiple windows and walked through my entire backyard. I do not know the laws around harassment or trespassing, but this woman's behavior is unacceptable and now has my wife scared. She is a perfect stranger to us, and we do not know anything about her or her intentions for repeatedly stopping by so many times. Is what she is doing illegal, or just annoying? Is it considered attempted breaking and entering for her to try to open my door?
Re: Previous Home Owner is Harassing Me
Oh good grief.
No, this is not harassment. Being stubborn about it doesn't exactly paint you in the best light, either. And no, it's not attempted breaking and entering.
By all means contact local law enforcement the next time.
