When Can You Terminate a Father's Rights Based on Abandonment
My question involves adoption law for the State of: Florida
I have legal custody of my soon-to-be 3 year old granddaughter and have had her since Oct of 2012 because of physical abuse from bio mom.
I got legal custody of her in May 2013 and our case was closed in June 2013.
We/She has had no contact with bio mom since May 2013 (7 1/2 months). I have read the law on what is considered abandonment in Florida and we definitely fall under that since there's NO contact whatsoever but I have yet to find how long a parent can go before it is considered abandonment. I have heard it is a year but haven't found out for sure.

What would be your purpose for claiming abandonment?

Well, I am posting this on the adoption of children forum...........So it would be for adoption purposes.
Re: How Long Before Considered Abandonment in Florida
Your best bet is to contact a few family law attorneys in your area who offer free consultation. If it does get to the adoption stage, you will want a good family law attorney anyway.
