Denied Unemployment Due to Misunderstanding of Class Schedule
My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: IL

    Hi,
I am not sure where to go next. I was laid off in October. When I was laid off I was a part time student and a full time employee. When I lost my job and filed for unemployment I put down that I was in school. I had been working full time and going to school for over a year at the time of layoff. I did indicate on my unemployment application that I was in school. this caused an issue and I keep getting letters that my school schedule doesn't jive with with their recoreds. So I have never recieved benefits. I cannot ever speak to anyone in IL, they send letters and tell me to call on a certain day and time to a number, but there is no person who ever answers it is all recordings. When I call their main number they keep telling me to wait until someone calls me and they don't know when that will be. Is there anywhere I can go for help to get out of this holding pattern? I have sent in a school form, work log and a school schedule, all at their request, but again never got an answer as to when or if I will ever get benefits.

Sometimes when it's taking way too long, you have to contact your state representatives. They have special numbers in the unemployment department. They call on your behalf, and most times you get a call from the UI people within days.

I would do as chyvan said.

With that stated.....do not enroll for classes for next semester right now. A lot of states want you to be available 24/7/365 for work, and expect you to drop any classes (because that is time you are not available to work). So find out what your state requires first. You may even have to go to the Umployment office in person to deal with all this. Online, you should be able to find the states booklet, and find out if classes are considered a no-no.

I will try that thank you. I hope the IL representative will care. I live in WI and worked in IL. I'll contact both. Thanks for the advise.
