Can I Get Reimbursed for Expenses Due to an Illness During a Business Trip
My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Colorado/Washington
I work for a company in Colorado from home in Washington State. My question is this. I travel for the company on occasion, and have a health issue that makes this difficult. When I say difficult, I mean I can get pretty sick.
My question is whether or not my high deductible for my health plan would be considered a reimbursable expense if I got sick while on company travel. I mean, I never want to get like desperately sick, but I especially don't want to get desperately sick if I'm going to have to shell out thousands of dollars to pay the deductible for medical care that wouldn't have been required had I not had to travel.
Thoughts, comments, etc., are all appreciated.
Thanks so much!
Re: Illness on Business Trip
If you mean what I think you mean, that's entirely up to your employer. You are not in one of the two states that ever requires expenses to be reimbursed; in one of the two states that does, only mileage is guarantee reimbursable by law. Even in the final state, I doubt sincerely that the law would require the employer to reimburse you, since you really can't prove that you wouldn't have gotten sick if you hadn't traveled.
Bottom line; no law is going to force your employer to reimburse you - no law is going to prohibit your employer from reimbursing you.
But I really, really, really wouldn't hold my breath expecting it.

What did your policy provider say?
What is the nature of the health condition?

Depending on the nature of the illness, your job and job duties, the term of your employment and the number of employees your employer has in the vicinity, you may be able to seek accommodation under the ADA to limit or end company travel - if you are inclined to pursue that sort of remedy. That's not the question you asked, so I'll leave it at that for now.
Depending also on the nature of your illness and whether travel contributes to episodes or flare-ups, you may be able to get care through worker's compensation. From the little bit you've shared so far it doesn't sound like that would follow from your illness, but we don't have the details.

Thanks everyone. My condition is autoimmune, which has affected my liver. Have also had some cardiac problems recently. Sounds like they are basically not under any obligations to, but might. I wouldn't have thought workers comp would apply.
