What Happens if You're Caught Shoplifting at Target

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
So today me and my friend were caught shoplifting today. We took a pack of tee shirts and a pack of socks which was approximately a total of $30.
However when we were walking out an undercover member as well as the security guard stopped us and made us empty out our purses. Then to show us a receipt for the items we stole. We didn't have the receipt since we shoplifted so the man told us that he never wanted to see us in the store again and that if we were caught in the store then we would consider to be trespassing and further action would be taken from there.
Does this mean that I am banned from all Targets since they probably took a picture of me and my friend from the security cameras? Also, how long would it take for me to go back to that Target?
They also did not ask for my name or any ID.
I do feel bad for shoplifting and will never do it again. I simply am asking because besides from this I have bought everything else from Target which would amount to at least $500 worth of items.
I am asking out of curiosity and I will no longer be shopping at Target.

Stay out of ALL Target stores, period. I mean - don't even go into one in another state. Target has their own crime lab, including Facial Recognition Software.

You dodged a bullet with no police being called. That $30 of items could have cost you THOUSANDS. You may still get a Civil Recovery letter in the mail from Target or it's lawyers - PAY IT.

You can shop Target online. that's it. Do not even enter their parking lot or they can have you arrested for Criminal Trespass.

If I were to dress differently, could I go into Target again? Like wear glasses and did my hair differently, would I be allowed in?

Is there some reason that you must shop at Target?

Well, if you want to be arrested for Criminal Trespass, by all means - put on glasses and style your hair differently.

Seriously. Do not even enter Target's parking lot. And I am talking NATIONWIDE.

Remember - you are now in Target's database. LP travels. Seriously - they can escort you to the LP office and call the police to formally arrest you for Criminal Trespass. And they may decide to share the shoplifting file with the police as well.

Wait atleast 6 months - then write Corporate with a sincere apology. They may write back and allow you to shop there again. If so, they will also inform LP that you are allowed back. If you get that permission - don't screw it up.

out of curiosity, if I go into the mall and Target is also located in it, would I be considered trespassing if I were to park by the Target but enter another store? There is only one parking area.

You would be best advised to park in the parking area of the store you are going into.

Please note - Target likely has shared your photo with other stores in the mall, and mall LP as well.

So....park away from Target. Grab a cart or shopping basket. And know you are likely being watched by LP - by video or a secret shopper following you. If you have a coat or jacket and it's warm enough out - leave it in your car. Do not put your hands in your pockets for any reason. I would even recommend simply carrying your ID and payment method with you, and leaving a purse at home.

If you have a Five Below store near you - go find the lanyard keychains....the side of the rack will hold ID holders. $2.00. For me - it means when I work, I don't have to worry about where to stash my purse. For you - it means no risk of being accused of shoplifting since all you can fit in it is ID, a couple credit cards, a little cash. You can't even fit a lipstick in it.

You would need to wear an LED light on your forehead to block facial recognition software. I think store LP would be suspicious of the light on your forehead.

I was told by an employee that I am only banned from only that Target.
If I were to go to another mall that has Target that was across town, would they follow me there as well even if I was not shopping at that Target? Or would the mall security follow me?

You are likely banned from ALL Target stores.

Seriously - stay the hell out of Target. Period. You don't realize how lucky you are that police were not called. If you go into a Target, you face the Criminal Trespass charge, and they do have 1-2 years to press the criminal SHOPLIFTING charge. Which will cost you a few thousand dollars. So really, if you need to shop Target that desperately - go to www.target.com and shop online only.
