Used My Mom's Debit Card Without Permission

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
A few months ago in an act of desperation to feed my Daughter I used my Mom's debit card without her permission and was caught. My Mom didn't realize it was me at first and called the store. They ran the tapes and saw me on camera.
The other day a cop came to my house and questioned me and showed me the pictures. I admitted to what I did and he told me that I wouldn't be arrested and that it was up to the store to decide if they would press charges or not.
I called the person from the store that is working my case and told him that I wanted to make it right and explained my situation and why I did what I did. He told me that if I payed the store back in full that they would not press charges.
So my question is if I am able to pay the store back and they do not pursue charges can I still go to jail. I'm really scared. I don't want to lose my baby. Please help.

If they don't pursue charges, you're not going to jail.

In fact, even if they do, you're likely not going to jail anyway.

She should be more concerned about fraud charges from the card issuer.

The total amount is $657.00. My Mom has been re embersed by the store and is not going to press charges. The cop said it was the store's decision since they are out the money.

Wow, that kid must really eat!!! That is almost a months food budget in many homes.

My Mom no longer speaks to me and she has every right not to.
