Will the U.S. Recognize a British Divorce
My question involves a marriage in the state of: Virginia

I married my partner in VA. Partner "Karen" is British. We've never lived together. If Karen gets a divorce through a British lawyer, will I be divorced in the US as well? To rephrase, will the lawyer go through the court system here to get the divorce? We never registered our marriage in Britain.

Thanks for any advice and references are much appreciated, if you have any.

If the divorce is valid in the UK, it will be valid here. Make sure you get and or respond to every filing though. You want to make sure this is done and dusted before you embark on another relationship.

I don't agree with that philosophy, really. As long as everyone is honest with each other, there is no reason not to embark on a new relationship while separated and "married" only according to paperwork.
