When is a Tenant Responsible for Repairs in NYC
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York
I live in a three floor brown stone Brooklyn, NY. I live with five other people. On the third floor there are three bedroom a kitchen and a full bath. On the main floor we have on bedroom a kitchen and a bathroom. In the basement where i live we have two bedrooms and the laundry. One of the bedrooms had a bathroom with a small window. The room i live in has two doors no window, no closet. I have a closet outside of my room that just collapsed yesterday. My landlord is tell me it's my responsabilly to fix the closet. I'm the only room without a window. How illegal is my situation?

You are renting a room and access to common areas, or are you renting the entire premises along with five other people/housemates? If the former, is your landlord in residence?

Exactly what do you mean by "just collapsed" and exactly how did that happen?

Depending on the facts, that may well be true.

Assuming it's not a legal bedroom that depends in no small part upon whether you are specifically renting the basement room, or if you got that room when you and your housemates decided who would live where.
Re: When is a Tenant Responsible for Repairs in NYC
I'm renting a basement room. The landlord does not live with us. No one is on a lease .
In the middle of the night the pole that you hang clothes from became unhinged from the drywall.
I found this house on criagslist , ithere where people living here before me. Again we have no lease.
Re: When is a Tenant Responsible for Repairs in NYC
If you're going to refuse to explain your rental situation, nobody can help you. You're either renting a room or you're renting the premises, and you're either renting from a master tenant as a subtenant or you're renting the room separately from the same landlord.
Also, I have never seen a closet rod collapse under its own weight.
Re: When is a Tenant Responsible for Repairs in NYC
I am renting the room from the landlord. There is no master tenant, because we don't have a lease.
The closet was a rod on three supporters. Two of the three supporters have been ripped out of the wall because of the weight on the rod and the supporters not being installed correctly. The link below is what the supporters look like.

Re: When is a Tenant Responsible for Repairs in NYC
Unfortunately your pictures did not open but we can surmise that the rod isn't made of iron and the landlord believes the weight of what you put on the rod caused the collapse and thus this is why they are stating this damage is your responsibility.
Are you now attempting to get out of all of this by claiming your bedroom is illegal?

The landlord is saying that she didn't install the closet rod so she doesn't have to repair it. I would like to have an idea of my leagel rights.
I'm living in a bedroom without windows, is that leagel.
We don't have a lease, is that leagel?
