Re: Who Expirenced Petty Theft/Shoplifting in Ca. What to Expect in Court
She needs a lawyer. If she can't afford one, plead not guilty and ask for a public defender (there will be a payback obligation). Ask about a First Time Offenders program.
She can expect court costs and fines, possibly Community Service (she gets to pay for that privilege), possibly an anti-theft class that she would pay for.
Also, the store will be sending a Civil Demand. This is separate from the criminal charge and needs to be paid immediately.

Can she just chose anti theft class instead of community service?? How much will be her fine and court fees??

No, she can't choose...she's the criminal. If she has to give up a few weekends, the court won't care.....
