    What Happens to Shoplifters in Court
    My question involves criminal law for the state of: california

    I was just wondering trying to help my friend out she was caught shoplifting and her court date is coming up.. its her first offense.. i was just wondering whats going to happened to her at the court she said she didnt still less than $50 and we did some research already.. her parents dont know about it either... shes already 25 so yah.

    Dose anyone ever went through it??

    Help and share please...

    She needs a lawyer. If she can't afford one, plead not guilty and ask for a public defender (there will be a payback obligation). Ask about a First Time Offenders program.

    She can expect court costs and fines, possibly Community Service (she gets to pay for that privilege), possibly an anti-theft class that she would pay for.

    Also, the store will be sending a Civil Demand. This is separate from the criminal charge and needs to be paid immediately.

    Can she just chose anti theft class instead of community service?? How much will be her fine and court fees??

    No, she can't choose...she's the criminal. If she has to give up a few weekends, the court won't care.....
