No, I actually met with the guy and he took my vehicle to get smogged. I found his information online. It was a "Pass" or don't pay guarantee. I know, too good to be true.
So you found this dude online, met him and just gave him your car so he could take it somewhere and he could get it smogged? You weren't there? If not, you just gave your vehicle to some strange person to take it to God knows where without any guarantee that he would return it. Really? You want people with 2 connected brain cells to believe that?

This is why I see a plea deal being encouraged. His attorney is not all that likely to allow him to take the stand where he will get chewed up on the stand and likely forced to admit that it sounded fishy.
@Squirty, it defies credulity to believe that you didn't AT LEAST SUSPECT something was fishy. You don't just give your car to some random dude so that he can take it someplace and get it to pass smog - all for a few dollars. How much did you pay for this service? That will be telling.

Somewhere along the line op is going to be asked to provide a name or contact info of this claimed Internet sourced person. If op cannot provide contact details, the story will be seen as BS and the prosecution continues. Op's only real salvation is whether the prosecutor believes the claim of the Internet dude and whether he believes it is worth attempting to catch and prosecute Internet dude.

That doesn't mean the OP will be innocent of any liability, only that it adds some sense of truth to the tale if this guy can be located and they can verify that he is, indeed, providing this service. It might mitigate the OP's offense, or, it might not.
Re: Arrested for Vehicle Registration Fraud VC 4463(A)(1)
It likely won't but it could be a large part of a plea deal
