Ticketed for Failure to Obey a Detour Sign - Was the Detour Properly Marked
My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Wisconsin

In case anybody wants to pull this up on Google Maps/Earth: I turned North on Schaefer Street from Calumet Street in Appleton, WI. The East lane of Schaefer Street was blocked off for about 50' starting about 10' North of the Bluebird Lane intersection due to road construction of some sort (at one of the exits of the Appleton East High School parking lot). The West lane remained open to through/southbound traffic. The road construction was marked with two road blocks in the East lane about 10' North of the Bluebird Lane intersection, with 4 signs attached to the road blocks: 1) Road Closed, 2) Detour (pointing West), 3) Do Not Enter, and 4) No Right Turn plus a Road Work Ahead sign 100 yards or so South of the road blocks.

Not that it matters in the eyes of the law, but this was an honest mistake. Following the detour would have taken me one block West and one North and literally only cost me the extra time it would have taken to stop at an additional stop sign. At least 5 other vehicles did the same thing while I was waiting patiently for my citation. Schaefer Street is not a busy street and maybe that's why my interpretation of this Detour sign was to simply go around the construction, not turn West onto Bluebird Lane. Or maybe it's because I can't ever recall encountering only one lane of a two lane road being detoured in the past. Regardless, does this detour sound legal and propperly marked? It obviously confused me.

You have told us that the road was clearly marked "1) Road Closed, 2) Detour (pointing West), 3) Do Not Enter", and I'm not seeing why you interpreted that as "Road Open, Don't Detour, Enter." Did you leave something out of your explanation?
