Minor Caught Stealing from a Store
I got caught stealing an iPod case (couldn't have been no more than 10 dollars) in WalMart today. I'm fourteen and it was my first offense.
They said the fine would be $500 and they'd mail me information on a court date and such, and they also said I could do community service in order to pay for the fine. How many hours of community service will I have to do, and what do they usually do in cases like these?
Please and thank you~
Re: Minor Caught Stealing from a Store
You need to have Mommy and Daddy get you a lawyer for your court date.
Mom and Dad will have to pay the court costs and fines.
You may have to attend an anti-theft class, which your parents will have to pay for.
Community service? Can't say if you will get that and how many hours.
What will happen? Well, if you were my kid, you would have no cell phone, no Ipod, no computer, no friends over, and you'd be on a child's handleash when taken to a store.

Ask your lawyer to help you get deferred adjudication. Find a part time job and start paying your parents back.

You support the idea of free ranging thieves?

Re: Minor Caught Stealing from a Store
I asked what State because laws are all different. In California the amount of $500. is for civil restitution. The civil restitution is separate from criminal action and there is no such thing as, "they also said I could do community service in order to pay for the fine" - You can't do community service to pay off a civil penalty. So, there you go little Miss Attitude.

You do realize that your $10 iPod case is gonna cost your parents atleast $2000-$3000 right? I'm not kidding.
And regarding Community Service....if you get it, you PAY for the privilege. Someone has to supervise you, keep track of your hours.....
