    Caught Shoplifting Music CDs
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Georgia

So I was caught shoplifting three Cds totaling 28.33 in walmart on sunday. I was taken into a room and the police were called, they issued me a citation and I was arrested. When the officers arrested me they said it is not a big deal because it is my first time. I am due in court on the 23rd of September and I am scared. It was so stupid and I will never do it again but I am worried it will go on the record and prevent me from getting a job in the future. I am 22. What can I expect on my court date, should I get a lawyer?

    yes.

many states have programs in place that allow a conviction to not be a conviction but you would be best served by an attorney familiar with the system and the best way to seek such treatment.

No conviction is actually diversion. If you complete the terms, you will not be convicted.

a deferred adjudication or adjudication withheld will result in no conviction showing on your record, if you comply with the requirements imposed upon you (usually something like fulfilling a term of probation and or fees and fines). I do not know what is available specifically in your state but, as I said, most states do have some sort of deferment available for first time offenders of such low level crimes.
