Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
You're not the only one who needs help. If Mom is seriously considering allowing her 16 year old child to marry, the whole family needs help. At 16, she is simply not old enough to make that kind of life-altering decision, which is why the law sets the legal age to marry at 18 in the first place. And quite frankly, if at 20 you are finding that kind of connection with someone four years younger, it doesn't say a whole lot for you.
(I know, I know. She's much more mature than other 16 year olds and how dare I judge and I don't know either of you. I'm saying it anyway. You surely don't think you're the first one here with this complaint, do you?)
And I'm not saying that because it's a same sex relationship - I'd be saying precisely the same thing if this were an opposite sex relationship.
Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
IMO nobody - opposite sex, same sex, makes no difference - nobody should get married until they're at least 25.
Do yourself a favor - go out and live. Get an education, get yourself in a stable (and I mean stable) financial situation, experience life a bit.
I don't care how mature anyone thinks they are at 16 or 20. Bottom line is, a 16 yo is not in the least bit truly self-aware and honestly? Neither is a 20 yo. You have any idea how much people change b/n the ages of 16 & 25 or 20 & 25. If I had married the people I was with at those ages my life would have been royally f'ed up.
Trust me, you are no different. Marriage is hard enough between two mature adults. What you're contemplating is a recipe for disaster.

Quoted for truth.
Same sex, opposite sex, gender-queer, don't care. No 16 year-old should be permitted to marry. Hell, no 18 year-old should be permitted to marry. I was 21, and that was only just barely old enough. Been married nearly 23 years, but probably would have divorced quickly if we had married earlier.
If my 17 year-old came to me to demand consent to marry his girlfriend, I'd lock his little ass up until he was 21.

Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
With the demise of DOMA, you are able to argue that your marriage should enjoy "full faith and credit" in Ohio, which is not to say that an Ohio court will necessarily agree, or that the Ohio courts won't revisit emancipation law in response to claims of emancipation based on gay marriage. The legal dust will settle over the next few years - we can tell you what we think should happen, but there will be legislators, prosecutors and judges who have a different opinion than ours.
Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
By then, she will no longer be a child and you won't want her anyway.
Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
Yep, I was thinking FF&C. I think I'm going to read up on it tomorrow re: same sex marriages. As far as I know, this is one area wherein FF&C hasn't been honored, but I haven't looked into it.
Re: Will Gay Marriage Result in Emancipation
Marriage is difficult. Agreeing on a budget, splitting cooking and housework. Getting private time to yourself.

My idiot state has refused to recognize same-sex marriages since Massachusetts first legalized them. The legislature and religionistas even went so far as to amend our state constitution to outright ban same sex marriages and the recognition of those performed in other states/countries.
The tide is slowly turning, but the earliest we're going to see any movement is 2014, when we expect to get a repeal of that horrid amendment on the ballot.
