Emancipation in Pennsylvania
I am 17 & live in philadelphia pa & I want to get emancipated I am currently living with my grand mother because when I lived with my mom her boyfriend hit me & she lied and said he didn't which wasn't the first time she did that now she is trying to get me to move back with her and I don't want to I HATE that house. We got in an argument which led to physical abuse. I can support myself I get a ssi check every month 639 I found a room for less than that. My grandmother who I live with is my payee and when I asked her now much I get she said 400 so I called social security and they said other wise. Even before I wanted to move out when I asked for money for things like my phone bill or just spending money she would yell and say no most of the time. Is this enough to get emancipated. I will be 18 on February 15th but that's way too long

Re: What Are My Chances of Being Emancipated
Not a chance. Abuse is not a justification for emancipation, period.
Your grandmother is free to apply the SSI payment to your board as she sees fit. She's not obligated to give you a phone or spending money with it.
The fact that you're on SSI pretty much precludes emancipation anyhow.
You'll have to tough it out to next February and then you'll figure out how hard it is to live on SSI by yourself.

You are not capable of supporting yourself. You cannot even figure out how to do something basic like starting your own thread.

Enough to Get Emancipated
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Pennsylvania I am 17 & live in philadelphia pa & I want to get emancipated I am currently living with my grand mother because when I lived with my mom her boyfriend hit me & she lied and said he didn't which wasn't the first time she did that now she is trying to get me to move back with her and I don't want to I HATE that house. Re: Enough to Get Emancipated
As I told you in the other forum, you do not qualify for emancipation. Emancipation requires demonstration of independent living. The fact is as a SSI recipient you are NOT. You guardian is not obliged to buy you a phone or give you any of the SSI money as long as she is applying it to your shelter and board. You're not being abused and even if you were, we don't emancipate the abused, we find them other custodial arrangements.
You'll have to tough it out until February. Then you can move out and see how far that SSI check gets you each month.
And for heaven's sake... STOP POSTING ON OTHER PEOPLE'S THREADS asking this question over and over.
You've been told that this is not proper. You appear to have real emotional issues that certainly will also preclude emancipation.
-
Re: Enough to Get Emancipated
For the last time, NO. This is not enough for emancipation. You do not have grounds for emancipation; you do not qualify for emancipation; you do not have anything resembling a ghost of a prayer of a hope of emancipation.
You will not be emancipated.
-
Re: Enough to Get Emancipated
Ask Kisha. She will tell you the same thing.

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
Why do you believe you should post that to somebody else's thread, dealing with Florida emancipation law? Do you believe that Pennsylvania is located in Florida?
Edit: Are you for real? How incredibly rude and immature you are to trash the forum like this.

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
If you can't post just one simple post with your question...you are very unqualified to even think of living alone.
While you think $639 is a lot of money....most apartment communities require your earnings to be a MINIMUM of 3 times your monthly rent.
-
Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
I never said 639 was a lot of money I know what money is because I stay with it I work in a hair salon and is in school to get my cosmetology license. And much to your surprise I'm moving out Monday I found a place and my mom finally stop being a dick head and agreed to it. I posted in several different forums because I needed answers bit I seems you guys don't know how to anything but make smart comments. But thanks for the advice anyway

Now take your rude little teeny tantrum elsewhere, child.

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
You think you are gonna live on $639 a month? :disillusionment: Pay rent? Eat? Buy staples like toilet paper, soap, dish detergent, toothpaste? Oh, don't forget paying the utilities, you do need electricity, water, trash pickup.....
Oh yeah...by the way...your "dickhead" of a mother doesn't have to let you take any of your belongings except the clothes you are wearing when you leave, or anything you purchased yourself and have a receipt for.
Good luck!

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
And just so that you know, you are still not emancipated. It takes much more than Mom allowing you to move out.

What makes you more important than anyone else who comes to us in need of answers? You're very clearly told when you post to only do so ONCE. Sorry, snowflake, you're just not that special.
As cbg notes, you're still not emancipated, and in fact, the state of Pennsylvania does not have statutory provisions for the emancipation of minors. Rather, it is handled on a county level, on a case by case basis, and most counties will NOT emancipate you.
If your mother changes her mind about letting you move out, she can have you dragged back home. Keep that in mind while you strut about as if you've accomplished something.

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
As I said before I also work in a hair salon. And my mother doesn't buy my clothes or toiletries. I haven't lived with my mother for years. As i said before it was a question that deserves a simple no. You have no grounds for emancipation & maybe even a second opinion from someone else. You guys should be thanking me for giving you some entertainment since you have nothing else to do w/ your miserable little lives but make rude irrelevant comments over the Internet. So you're welcome

We're actually saddened that your parent/s did such a lousy job. They've raised a selfish whiny little brat.
Harsh? Perhaps. Welcome to the real world.

Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
So you can flagrantly violate the rules but we're supposed to ignore that and let you do whatever you like? And meanwhile treat you with the courtesy that you omitted from both your posts and your behavior?
Sorry, cupcake, that's not how life works. You got your legal answer and there is no "opinion" about it. You are not emancipated, you do not qualify for emancipation, and any time she wants to up until your 18th birthday your mom can withdraw her permission and drag you home by your ear. You also got a few home truths about how you present yourself to the world - as a spoiled little brat who doesn't believe the rules apply to her. That's just an added bonus - you don't have to pay extra for it.
-
Re: Becoming Emancipated at 16/17
But since we have no life.....I guess you should go talk to a lawyer in your area, who will laugh you out of his/her office within 5 minutes.

you contradict yourself in a single line, that is quite impressive.
SSI is the taxpayers supporting you because you can't support yourself
where do you expect to find a place you will be able to afford:
- Rent
- Heat/Hot Water
- Electricity
- Food
- Transportation
- Cell Phone
- Clothing, Socks, underwear
- Winter gear (Boots, Coat, Gloves)
- Laundromat
- Plus all the smaller items
- pesticides
- mouse traps/baits
- toilet paper
- soap
- shampoo
- toothpaste
- deodorant
- household cleaning supplies
- personal hygiene products
Getting by on your own on just SSI is going to be hard enough when you are of age and legally responsible for yourself

Apparently not bad enough OP cannot work, while collecting SSI. I wonder how much of the earnings are getting reported.

Re: Should I Get Emancipation
Let's not forget:
Basic cosmetics.
Shoes.
Work Uniform clothing.
Health Insurance.
Prescriptions/Over the Counter medications.
Bath and kitchen towels.
Pots and pans; plates. Silverware. Glasses.
Transportation.
Trash bags.
Laundrymat. You're looking at $10/wk with this.
Before you move out on Monday... I would seriously go to Walmart or wherever and price this stuff. And see if $639 is really going to cover your expenses.

Lawdy, child. If you were mine, I'd snatch you bald headed and sit you down with a bar of soap in your yap until you learned to not sass your betters. You are quite the piece of obnoxious work.
Boo hoo, you don't like the law. Tough schnickies, kid. Life is hard, it doesn't ever get easier, and you're in for some hard lessons.
