Marijuana Possession Out of State
Hello,
So I was pulled over in Michigan on Thursday June 27th and was charged with a possession of marijuana misdemeanor. I am from Minnesota. The officer said that we would be able to call and take care of it and that we had 10 days. It is now the 5th of July and I called the court house this morning and they are claiming that I HAVE to come in to court. Is this true? That I have to appear in court? ..meaning I have to drive 10 hours back to Michigan? There is no way around this? This is also my first offense.. I mean the only other ticket ive ever been issued is a parking ticket. Also, because I wouldnt be able to get there until Monday the 8th and my 10 day window will be closed could they potentially put me in jail because I would have a warrant out? Super Confused and everyone I call and talk to at the court house wont answer my questions they just transfer me to a voicemail. Please Help!

You were charged with a crime. One that can put you in jail for a year. Yes you will have to appear. You'll want a lawyer anyhow. Get one, and he can arrange an appearance that won't involve having you be arrested/jailed. There is an alternative sentencing called HYTA that you may be interested in. However, Michigan courts are all over the place on mitigation so I would really recommend a lawyer.
