    Are Smoke Headlights Legal
Hello i just moved to oceanside ca. And i have a custom show car. Im in need of some headlights i wanted to get some smoke headlights. were i came from tenn thay did have a law about dark headlights but no one ever pulled me over for them. The covers that i have a vere dark and i could drive around at night time with them.. i know its not safe. but now that i moved to ca i dont know much about the laws here..
So i wanted to get a set of smoke with 6000 hids. and i dont know how the cops are here. I look around on some web pages and thay were saying no i can not have them on my car. i dont understand why i cant get smoke ones with hids. the smoke ones are not dark at all it just puts a tint on the lights.. you can still see the headlights vere good. and with the hids thay make it eazer to see.

Some one please help with some info..

A California police officer will ticket you for any modifications to the headlights. So if you want to add to the ecomony by paying unnecessary fines be my guest.

You mean "a light tint" and "they are aftermarket headlights"

What's the point of using HIDs to make headlights brighter only to turn around and tint the lenses to make it less bright?

At any rate, the answer to your question is: Anything that deviates from the manufacturer's ratings and/or specs is illegal.

Non-O.E.M. HIDs are not legal, specifically because of issues with light pattern scatter which may cause severe glare for drivers coming in the opposite direction. Original Equipment HIDs have special projectors that are designed for HID bulbs.

When I was in OSide, we used to stop and cite guys with those headlights. Whether they still do, I can't say. But, if you want to avoid contacts with the police, make the headlights street legal here.

To the best of my knowledge it is illegal to tint or "smoke" either your tail lights or head light.
